What's In A Name?

Someone got me thinking about names recently, but I forgot who and even after trawling through links and blogs I still don't know who it was. So if it was you, thanks, because this is a story that kills me.

This is about Sarah's best friend, who has a Turkish father. Not surprisingly, then, she has a Turkish name. Her surname is Sadicoglu, pronounced Sad-i-coal-oo. Now, that's one thing, but she also has a Turkish forename. Wait for it... Tulin. This is pronounced Tool-In. I kid you not.

Yup, of course her school days involved a reasonable chunk of hell's own torments. But thankfully she pulled through, and she's some kind of spectacular woman, let me tell you. Still, she got out of Bradford as soon as she could, and moved herself off to the Isle of Wight. (Which is why we get to go there 1 2.)

Being a spectacular woman she of course soon met a man, and they're now a couple living happily together in Cowes with their young son. However, Tulin has pretty much ruled out marriage. She has done this on the grounds that she would have an even worse name than she has now.

What, you say? Yes. It's true. Were she to marry Gary, she would become none other than Mrs Tulin Broomhead.

Personally, I think she's being selfish. It has to happen for the toasts alone.

I could see the problem with that name, but I wonder if kids mocking funny names is lessening nowadays as it seems as everyone has a funny ethnic or made-up name.

Hiya Owlie.. (wink wink) my thoughts you ask? Ok, I will share.. LOL

Umm.. why can't she marry but yet maintain her maiden name? Many women are doing it these days and I am sure that if she explained to Mr. Broomhead he would understand and be happy just at the fact that Tulin married his ass?

((**((Owl & The Owl Family))**)) hope all is well and safe at home!

How ironic, Neil... what's in a name? LOL!

I think you may be seeing the glass half full, there Neil. :) Recently I heard of a boy called Eurine - yes, literally pronounced urine. Personally, I can't imagine for a second that he's going to get away with it!

Chris - (((***hugs***))) How long's it been, eh? (Did you shoot the boss yet? LOL!) Anyway, yeah, I think that's what would happen, but on the other hand it seems that the way things are suits them, so maybe they'll just let things be. Interestingly, their son has his mum's surname. I think that says a lot... :)

hey, you know what they say..."if it isn't broken, why fix it?". I don't think Tulin is so bad. ;)

I've known a few with unfortunate names, like Grubb, Butts, and Lipshitz (not making those up!). My maiden name was Hope and I was called Hopeless all the time. We have a name in common, even.

I'm rambling. Ok, outta heeeere. xoxo

I know someone named Sterling Silver, and my boss grew up with a kid named Richard Head (shame on both their parents!). What we should really fear are the company mandated email addresses where, let's say, Samuel Tinky becomes stinky@companyname.com.

celti - I didn't say anything was broken, did I? :D

You did lose me a bit, but Hope is a fab name! Now, have a coffee. ;)

Mr. Schprock - LOL! You're so right, there's disasters just waiting to happen. It's remarkable that you were so restrained in your potential example... ! :D

Christine - Wings crossed. :)

I LOVE unusual names...and Tulin is pretty cool in my book. Of course, my daughter has not one but SIX names (3 given, 3 orthodox). And should a son ever be born, the hubby has deemed he will be named Penndragon.

Angela - My daughter Tamara has 5 names, one of them Star, but I think I would never have a chance of naming a child Penndragon, so good luck to your hubby! lol
